Scorer: Steven Hutchinson (on trial from Teversal)

Dearden - Reserves deserved more

Billy Dearden believes the Stags reserves deserved to win by a bigger margin, after they beat Wigan Athletic 1-0 on Wednesday.
The second string's display in the Avon Insurance League Division Two clash was far more convincing than the final scoreline suggested.
Trialist Steve Hutchinson gave Mansfield a fourth minute lead, pouncing on the loose ball after keeper Scott Tywain had parried a Danny Bacon shot, and for most of the 90 minutes it was one-way traffic.
Ian Pendlebury pulled off two goal line clearances to deny Bacon and Hutchinson and Tywain tipped over spectacularly to keep out Bacon. Neil Lazarus also fired inches wide for the home side.
Wigan, with the experience of Alan McLoughlin in midfield, rarely threatened though Stags keeper Michael Bingham was fortunate when he believed Neil Roberts' free kick was going wide just before half-time only to see it hit the post.
However he then showed great reactions to turn away David Moore's follow-up, and he later saved well after a 25-yard effort from Paul Dalglish.
"I thought we did well and should have won it by a lot more than we did," said Dearden.
"I was a little disappointed in Wigan but we played well and that's the main thing."

Trialist impresses

Billy Dearden has praised trialist Steve Hutchinson, who scored the only goal in Wednesday's reserve game, and is keen to observe him further.
The 21-year-old striker plays in the Central Midlands League for Teversal, for whom he scored almost a goal a game in over 20 appearances last season, and has already chalked up eight in six games this season.
Hutchinson, who has just completed a two-week trial at Rochdale and has also been looked at by Notts County, made an impressive start to his trial period at Field Mill.
"I thought he did all right yesterday and we will have him here a bit longer to have a proper look at him," said Dearden.
"He will train with us and play another reserve game. It will all depend on when Teversal's games are as I wouldn't play him next Wednesday if Teversal play Saturday and Tuesday.
"That wouldn't be fair on the lad as he will obviously want to impress us and it would be asking too much to play so much football."
Hutchinson did come off for the last 18 minutes after twisting his knee but it is not thought to be serious and he will be treated at Field Mill.
He looked strong and willing yesterday and might have had a hat-trick with a little luck.

Report from: www.wiganlatics.co.uk
Wigan Athletic’s reserve side fell to an early goal in their second defeat of the new Avon Insurance League Division Two campaign.
After going down 4-2 at home to Notts County in their first match of the season, Latics fought hard to get at result at Mansfield but could not break the strong Town defence.
But reserve team coach Colin Greenall said there were plenty of positives to take into their home clash with Carlisle next week.
“We didn’t play as well as we can do in the first half and made a lot of schoolboy errors but we learned from that and didn’t give them many chances in the second half.
“We didn’t create many clear cut chances ourselves but we did put them under a lot of pressure. So there are positive signs. Mansfield were stronger than us and were probably the better team on the day but if our kids learn from that, I will be happy.
“If I’m saying the same things in six months then I know the kids aren’t learning anything but hopefully they will get stronger and keep improving as the season progresses.”
Among the first team stars in action were goalkeeper Derek Stillie, the recently re-recruited Paul Dalglish, midfielder Alan McLoughlin and striker Neil Roberts.
