STAGS
RESERVES LOSE TO COUNTY
22/08/01, by Rob Wheldon
The Stags gave a first 90 minutes of the season to Adam Barrett.
The opening half was a fairly even affair, Bingham having to
scramble away a far post header from McNamara and at the other
end Mitchell heading a Williams right wing cross over the bar. At
half time keeper Michael Bingham was replaced by Jason White. In
the second half the Stags had many more chances, first on 55
minutes Bacon screwed his left foot shot wide and a minute later
Barrett forayed forwards only to see his shot blocked on the edge
of the 18 yard box. For County Paul Heffernan hit a left foot
shot over the bar then saw his header hit the bar with Jason
White beaten. It was Heffernan who capitalised on a Jason White
error for the only goal of the game, White unable to hold a tame
shot and Heffernan left with the simple task of finding an empty
net. Stags should have equalised 5 minutes later, Danny Bacon put
clean through but his first shot hit the right hand post then
from the rebound his second shot hit the left hand post.
So defeat but a good 90 minutes for Adam Barrett in a tough
encounter. Alistair Asher looked excellent at right back and
Danny Bacon always caused the County defence problems but did
have that incredible miss near the end.
Stags: Bingham (White 45), Asher, Jervis, Lazarus, Clarke,
Barrett, Williams, Pemberton, Bacon, Mitchell (Ghaichem 75), Rew
- Subs Not Used: Holyoak, Elliott, Davies

The reserves lost 1-0 to Notts County at Meadow Lane on Wednesday
afternoon, Paul Heffernan grabbing the goal for the home side on
72 minutes.
Teenage keeper Jason White, a half-time substitute for Mansfield,
made a hash of Ryan Ford's speculative long range effort and the
ball invitingly for Heffernan to pick up the pieces.
Even so, Mansfield should have finished the game with a draw
after Danny Bacon went through on goal on 77 minutes for the
visitors. His first shot hit the left post and, when the ball ran
back to him with the keeper grounded, his second effort hit the
right post.
Neil Lazarus rattled the County angle in the 10th minute with a
25-yard shot. But Stags first half keeper Michael Bingham made
good saves to twice keep out Heffernan who also headed against
the Mansfield crossbar on 68 minutes.
Billy Dearden said: "It wasnt a bad performance for
such a young side.
"We are just not getting the breaks at the moment, same as
the night before.
"The keepers made a mistake to gift them the goal and
how Danny Bacon didn't score I'll never know. You'd get odds of
300-1 at the fairground on him to hit both posts like that!"
